Don't you know that the body is a robe that was given to you for a certain period of time? Put on the light of the mind so that the body itself stops being a burden and becomes a lively song. When the mind is enlightened, the flesh glows like a lamp in the night.
— Yara Mekawei and Amir Rezk, inspired by the writings of the Desert Fathers
Borrowed Light is an electroacoustic composition by Yara Mekawei and Amir Rezk that deals with the ontological connection between human flesh and lunar cycles. The sonic performance weaves a multi-layered landscape of sounds: deep, earthy basses and organic drums pick up on the heaviness of physical bodies, while swirling guitar sounds and electronic textures rise like shimmering moonlight. A speaking voice is woven into the composition, which recites Coptic liturgical texts such as Midnight Praise (Tasbeha) and thus draws on a living Egyptian tradition that sees the moon as a heavenly figure for the restoration of earthly flesh. By translating early ideas of cosmological connection into an immersive contemporary soundscape, Mekawei and Rezk present a changing sound experience that functions as a typological blueprint of the realm of night. It does not regard the night as an empty space, but as a sacred ecosystem — a place of cyclical transformation and collected memories.
