With 'Breaking the Waves', film prodigy Lars von Trier left his postmodern, genre-ironic universes and struck up the great psychological melodrama. The film about the young naive Bess (Emily Watson in her feature film debut) and her love for her beloved husband Jan (Stellan Skarsgård) became a worldwide hit and still stands today as one of Trier's most central works. The film is 159 minutes of intensive emotion conveyed in hand-held, coarse-grained Cinemascope, and it hits like a fist in the diaphragm.
