What does it mean that this duckling is “ugly”? Is that really the case? No, but it really starts to feel that way when others call them that way, that's how they treat them. For him, it becomes true.
However, this duck is just a little different than the rest. Somehow it doesn't fit into the world he was born into — his principles and expectations. Not because he rebels, wants to stand out or get attention — no. It just can't do otherwise.
The duckling is in trouble for this reason — and no small one. In addition, he thinks he has to face them all on his own. Thankfully, this is not the case at all. Thankfully, he has a loving family. There is one wise teacher. There are friends from the yard. Finally, there are also swans. They can all help him stop thinking bad about himself — and move into the world feeling it's beautiful.
