William Shakespeare's “The Storm” is the last play of the Stratfordian, often referred to as “romance”. It combines comedy, drama and fairy tale. It tells the story of Prosper, Duke of Milan, who is exiled from his rightful principality along with his daughter Miranda. On a remote island, he wields power through knowledge and magic.
The island woven from the dreams of Prosper — in the production of the Teatro Bagatela evoking paintings by Salvador Dali and Giorgio de Chirico — becomes a space where worlds collide. Here the naive love of the young meets the cynicism of the old. The sudden and heartfelt affection of Miranda and Ferdinand, son of Prosper's mortal enemy Alonso, is treated instrumentally. It becomes a tool for building political arrangements and influence.
The fairytale, often dreamlike world of “The Storm” is also painted by the magical characters Ariel and Kaliban. Ariel, the spirit of air, is the tool of Prosper's spells and personifies the desire for freedom. Kaliban, the son of a witch, bound by land and instinct, reveals the dark side of power and colonization.
“Storm”, recognized as an art of reckoning, is a story of power, forgiveness and relinquishment of control. Full of magic, lyricism and mystery, it can be read as Shakespeare's symbolic farewell to the theater.
Tobacco products were used as props in the performance.
