Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth and Nothing Butt

Drop helmet and inhibitions and step into the freaked, freaked, disturbing and ever-changing universe of Texan Butthole Surfer. A world of psychedelic consciousness expansion, frenetic noise, pop sensibility and dadaist spirit that has been summarized by some under the term art-punk. Or performance art, as the group likes to call it.

A project that director Tom Stern has managed to illuminate credibly and completely without filter, because since the mid-1980s he has had close contact with the group, documented its merits and forged a very special bond with its members. Also the core, consisting of singer Gibby Haynes, guitarist Paul Leary and drummers King Coffey and Teresa Nervosa (double percussion on stage for several periods) — and the 13 bassists (!) , which has featured in the lineup since its formation in 1981.

Prepare for anything but a saint's account. Here is a film bubbling with life and playfulness, nudity, infantile creative urges, drugs — lots of drugs — thigh-shattering humour and poignant initiations into personal trauma, sexual orientation and the need to break with normality. All complemented by superb archival material and the coolest animations of the year!
