About the event

Does art in public spaces really enrich our environment? We'll talk about murals, urban aesthetics, and who should decide what stays part of our shared landscape for longer.

Does art in public spaces really enrich our environment? Who should decide what stays part of our shared landscape for longer? And is it possible to come to an agreement on urban aesthetics at all?

We invite you to a meeting dedicated to art in public space, combined with a walk through the residential art gallery. The event will be an opportunity not only to talk about how art affects our cities and everyday life, but also to take a closer look at it — in the places we use every day.

The first part of the meeting will begin with a conversation with Dr. Joanna Pałys, who leads the Studio of Design of Architectural Painting and Art in Public Space at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. We will talk about murals, urban aesthetics and the relationship between art, architecture and the space in which we live. We will consider what makes some works enrich the urban fabric and others arouse opposition. Should art in the public space suit everyone? Or is it her role to spark discussion?

After the conversation, we will go for a walk around Karłowica-Różanka to see how art can function outside the traditional gallery. With the map in hand, we will visit the places that, as part of the project “I was here — Art and education in the local public space”, joined the “Become an Art Gallery” action and made available their spaces for the presentation of works by local artists.

We will look where we shop every day, drink coffee or use local services, discovering art in a completely different context. It will be a walk about art, but also about places, people and the neighboring space, which for a moment turns into an open gallery.
