The Entertainment Theater invites you to one of the loudest musicals in the world: Cabaret. Apparently, this is just a story about two young people who are united by a sudden feeling. Seemingly only in the background is the dramatic relationship of two elderly people, whom the cruel wheel of history does not allow for a late, perhaps last, love. Cabaret is above all a brilliantly constructed, full of great, hit music, a story about the nascent Nazism.
In the turbulent years that followed the end of the First World War, Berlin turned into a truly cosmopolitan city. The end of restrictions and prohibitions, a clear moral and moral relaxation, and — understood after the nightmare of war — the affirmation of life brought with them a blast of liberalism and even promiscuity. In this atmosphere, newcomers from different sides and from different hemispheres began to feel great in Berlin: expressionists, sexomaniacs, dancers-nudists, embezzlers, kings of the black market, drug addicts, transvestites, pimps, prostitutes, magicians...
Such a grumpy audience began to appear every night in Berlin's cabarets: in smoky, bustling establishments, at tiny tables lined with liquors, very real life was going on. Striptease, jazz and dance orgy...
Meanwhile, something grew and swelled in the streets, which to this day amazes historians. It is difficult to explain why the free nation at the centre of Europe — a nation rich in history and tradition — voluntarily renounced its freedom and plunged first into collective madness and then into a sea of crime.
The musical Cabaret tells the story of this very moment, when the affirmation of life bordering on hysteria meets the growing horror of Nazism. The brilliant work of Kander, Masteroff and Ebb is dangerously timely again...

As Daniel Wyszorodki writes in the encyclopedic work “But musicals!” , Cabaret is “one of the musicals of all time, a gripping and groundbreaking (...) An adult musical, “dripping with decadence” as much as was possible in 1966 on stage. In the excellent film of 1972, much more was allowed...” The show was honored with eight Tony Awards 1967 (best musical, best songs, supporting actor, supporting actress, directing, choreography, set design and costumes). In 1998, the Tony Award for Best Revival was awarded to an actor, actress and supporting actor. In addition, the London revivale was awarded the prestigious Olivier Award: in 1994 for Best Supporting Actress and — in 2006 — for Supporting Actress and for Choreography.
The musical premiered on Broadway in November 1966, and toured the West End in February 1968. In 1987, a new version of the musical — revised — was created, which, however, did not reach Poland at the time. And the Polish premiere of Cabaret (according to the script from 1966) took place on June 26, 1992 in the then Wrocław Operetta (today it is the Capitol Music Theater). Directed by Jan Szurmiej. The role of Clifford Bradshaw was played at the time by Jacek Bończyk.
Three months later (18 September 1992), the premiere of Cabaret, directed by Marcel Kochańczyk, took place in Chorzów. The choreography was composed by Henryk Konwiński, the scenography was designed by Bogusław Cichocki, and the costumes by Dorota Morawetz. The musical direction was taken over by Jerzy Jarosik. The character of Sally Bowles was played by Maria Meyer, as Clifford was partnered with Cezary Jakubicki (some time later he was replaced by Mirosław Książek). They created an unforgettable couple: Elżbieta Okupska as Fräulein Schneider and Stanisław Ptak as Herr Schultz. Ernst Ludwig was played by Robert Talarczyk and Fräulein Kost by Lidia Majerczak (later Agata Witkowska). The director entrusted the role of the Master of Ceremonies to Jacente Jędrusik and it was one of the greatest creations of this actor. The audience loved Chorzów Cabaret at first sight. Critics also appreciated the performance, and the Jury of the GOLDEN MASK Artistic Award honored Cabaret. The performance at the Entertainment Theater was staged until the end of 2002.
poster design: Magdalena Marczyńska. The project is also a semester work in the Image, Promotion and Identification Laboratory at the Department of Graphic Design at the Design Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice.
The rights of the authors of the libretto, songs and music to the musical Cabaret ver. revised are represented in Poland by Elżbieta Manthey's Drama and Theatre Agency ADiT in Warsaw.
