For more than forty years, John Rutter's Requiem has remained one of the most eagerly performed choral works of modern times. The composer wrote them after the death of his father, giving the work a very personal touch. He himself emphasized that he wanted to create music that his father would listen to with pleasure. The work was also inspired by Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, a work whose manuscript Rutter studied in the mid-1980s at the Bibliothèque nationale in Paris. It was there that his vision of the modern requiem was born: full of light and solace. Instead of the monumental drama known from Berlioz, Verdi or Britten, Rutter proposes music full of inner peace. The clear form and captivating melodies made the song quickly gain popularity around the world.
