Dündar visits the man who was supposed to murder him in prison. He, in turn, now fears for his own life due to impending deportation to Turkey. Through him and through further research, he comes across a network of secret deals between democratic and autocratic governments and their connections to organized crime and terrorist organizations. Can Dündar is a journalist, documentary filmmaker and author. As editor-in-chief of the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet, he reported, among other things, on arms shipments from the Turkish secret service to Syria. As a result of his investigative research, he was sentenced in absentia to 27 years in prison in Turkey for espionage and betrayal of state secrets. During court proceedings, he was assassinated outside the Istanbul courthouse in May 2016.
In his book “I Met My Murderer — A Journalist and the Dark Side of Power,” Dündar tells of the encounter with the man who had been commissioned to murder him. Based on this personal story, he sheds light on the interconnections between democratic and authoritarian governments, organized crime and terrorist structures, as well as the mechanisms that link all of this together.
Can Dündar has received numerous awards for his commitment to press freedom and independent journalism.
