Known worldwide as the voice of Caro Emerald, she now simply performs as Caro. From Glastonbury to Sziget and from Tokyo to Los Angeles, Caro has played hundreds of concerts and sold millions of records worldwide. In the Netherlands, she broke chart records and surpassed “Thriller” in number 1 in the number of weeks — an achievement that cemented her place in European pop history. She later represented herself with “The Jordan” with a darker, more introspective sound.
But Caro has always been Caro. Her voice — unmistakable, timeless, international, full of elegance and at the same time raw humanity — has accompanied every development. Now she is creating something new under her own name: alto pop, which borrows from 80s pop, 90s ballads and classic R&B, with a sound that feels both ancient and unadulterated contemporary. “Returning to Innocence” marks a return to the creative core — a self-confident and completed work based on their own ideas. After the previously released singles “I Can't Win”, “Greatness”, “Call the Shots” and “The Guy Bangs”, “Already Lost” is another insight into the complex sound of the project.
The track features deep, dissonant and cinematic synthesizer sounds that are based on electronic production that simmers without ever boiling over. A programmed beat that remains light under all this heaviness, but when it breaks — just once, very narrowly — it feels like an exhale. He's already gone. She just hasn't stopped holding on to his shape yet. Not sexually. Not really affectionate either. More like a victim. Feed something that can't grow and still do it.
“Returning to Innocence” is a bold and cross-genre pop album that reflects Caro's artistic range and independence. As her most vulnerable work to date, the album is a deeply personal examination of being a woman — both with how it is lived and with how it is imagined. Through groovy alternative pop with sacred choirs, it questions and redefines traditional role models for women and offers a modern vision that covers the entire spectrum of femininity.
This is an album about permission: to be fallible and divine, hungry and humble, strong and vulnerable at the same time. Caro digs out the archetypes that live in every woman: the mother, the child, the lover, the warrior. They are not separate women; they are a woman who has fully realized herself.
The sound is ancient and futuristic at the same time: synthesizers and multi-layered vocal voices create enthralling, memorable pop that builds on a variety of grooves from R&B to breakbeat to rock and fluently alternates between old-school soul and modern avant-garde. Confessions never sounded so catchy.
Just imagine: the emotional depth of Lorde, the sonic adventurous spirit of Frank Ocean, the atmospheric spirituality of Enigma — merged into something timeless.
“Returning to Innocence is not about rediscovering innocence,” explains Caro. “It's about accepting that everything — the beautiful and the unpleasant — is part of who I am. ”
