CHAIN — REACTIE
Music as a reaction to color and structure, sound as a complement to words and gestures, and finally music as a chain of associations and drifting meanings — these perspectives come together in the program “Chain — reaction”.
To begin with, we will hear Steven Stucky's Ad Parnassum. The track refers to Paul Klee's famous painting of the same name. The music takes on the play of colors and varied textures: the flickering sound motifs, like specks of paint, gradually reveal the outline of a larger whole. Klee himself borrowed the title from Johann Joseph Fuks' treatise on Counterpoint. The painterly trope leads to Andrzej Karałow's viridian, motion, hesitate. Virydian is the name of the green pigment. The juxtaposition of colour, movement and... hesitation evokes an association with the painter's hand, paused for a moment between an inner impulse, a creative need and a conscious decision to take another brush stroke. This piece was commissioned by Chain Ensemble, its premiere will be preceded by a conversation with the composer.
After the break, Arthur Kroschl's Fracture will sound. The title “crack” or “fracture” moves the imagination from the softness of the painterly penetration of colors in previous works to the hard matter subjected to stress. The reflection of the disturbed structure in Kroschl's work finds an aesthetic counterbalance in Francesco Filidei's Finito ogni gesto. And this time we have the context of other art disciplines. Filidei refers to the poetry of Edoard Sanguineti by dedicating a piece to his memory. Is the end of any gesture a closure, an end, or does it leave room for something new? Caroli Bauckholt's Treibstoff — “fuel” — ends the concert. The music is set in motion by tapping, gasping, snorting and crackling of the running machine. Overlapping rhythms, accelerations and stops create a picture of a complex organism. In it you can hear the incessant effort to sustain the movement. Resistance to entropy. The chain reaction continues.
The commission of Andrzej Karałow's work was co-financed from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund — a state special purpose fund, as part of the program “Composer Orders”, implemented by the National Institute of Music and Dance.
