The Circus brings the series of long Chaplin silent films set in Babylon to its grand finale.
Following the overwhelming success of The Kid, Gold Rush, City Lights and Modern Times, Chaplin's reflection on the topic of circus from the perspective of the most important character: The Clown.
Thanks to the live performance of Chaplin's original music, audiences can experience the masterpiece exactly as it was released in cinemas almost 100 years ago.
Where is the culture of European traveling theaters, where has the centuries-old culture of comedic folk theatre gone? Pushed away from cinema.
And Chaplin's art sets the height and end point for this in the new medium.
You'll laugh, you'll cry and never forget this movie!
For “The Circus,” Charles Chaplin received his first Academy Award at the first awards ceremony in 1929, which was not yet called “Oscar” at the time. The special prize was awarded for “versatility and genius in the fields of writing, acting, directing and production.”
The film certainly deserves this award. It contains some of his best comedic inventions, subtly balanced with feelings that are kept strictly under control. But paradoxically, this is the only film of his mature feature film productions that Chaplin never mentions once in his extensive autobiography. As late as 1964, it seemed as though he would rather forget this film.
The tramp is mistaken for a pickpocket and is hunted down by the police. He happens to end up in a circus, where the audience thinks the performance is a successful act and celebrates it stormy. He is promptly hired by the circus director. When the hitchhiker, who can't be funny on command, falls in love with the principal's daughter, the challenges begin.
