CHOJNY. JAM

October 16 at MSK: Chojny will be held for the first time in CHOJNY. JAM — a new, monthly series of meetings devoted to motor and musical improvisation. No division into styles, techniques and genres. With space for both those who want to get in motion and those who prefer to observe.

The first meeting will take place from 18:30 to 21:30 at MSK: Chojny, 13 Lokatorska Street in Łódź. Participation is free.

A space for meeting, movement and improvisation CHOJNY. JAM was created from the need to create a regular meeting place for people associated with different movement and performance environments. We invite dancers, performers, improvisers, people working with movement, but also everyone who is simply curious about the body in motion.

It is not necessary to represent a specific style or have experience in improvisation. It is also not necessary to attend the whole event. You can get in motion, stop, observe, take a break and come back. You can also stay on the side of the audience throughout the evening.

There is no set choreography or one proper way to participate. The starting point is the encounter — with one's own body, other people, space and live music.

Three parts of CHOJNY. JAM Each meeting consists of three parts, which gradually lead from start-up, through open jam, to performative improvisation.

18:30 — 19:15 | IMPRO STARTER The evening will begin with a 45-minute start led by an invited person. During the first edition, she will be Martyna Rakoczy.

This is a time to awaken the body, activate attention and catch contact with the space and the other participants. The starter is a gentle entry into improvisation and preparation for the further part of the meeting.

19:15 — 20:45 | JAM The heart of the whole event — an hour and a half of joint improvisation with live music.

There is no pre-established choreography or script. Movement and music are created here and now. Participants are free to enter and exit the activity, change the way they participate, stop and observe.

It is a space to check what can happen between bodies, sound and space, when instead of realizing the finished material, we begin to react to what is happening around us.

20:45 — 21:30 | 1 · 3 · 5 IMPRO The last part of the evening will be performative. This time, who will appear in space will be decided by chance.

During the jam, any willing person will be able to throw a fate with his name into the hat. Then we will draw dancers who will meet the musicians in improvisations created in the presence of the audience.

1 — one person dancing meets with one musician — maximum 10 minutes.

3 — three dancing people meet two musicians for a maximum of 15 minutes.

5 — five people dancing improvise with the entire musical composition — maximum 20 minutes.

This is the moment when the self turns into a performative action, and improvisers also face the awareness of the viewer's presence. There are no rehearsals, finished material or the ability to predict the result - the composition is created in real time.

Live Music The first edition of CHOJNY. JAM is musically co-created by the Łódź Improvised Orchestra — a project led by conductor Julia Partyka, combining conducting practice with music composed in real time.

The artists move between different musical languages — from sonorism, through groove and ethnic inspirations, to contemporary classical music and jazz. However, it is not about reproducing specific species. Music is created in a given moment, in response to the rest of the musicians, space and what happens in motion.
