Art in Silesian, about Silesia and Silesia!
Cholonek is a show about people living in between. Between Poland and Germany. Between sleep and wakefulness. Between tragedy and farce. For Silesians and those who do not understand Silesia. Stick to the anthill of Silesian complexes, nationalisms and grievances against Poland and Germany. Full of plebeian, Silesian humor and anecdotes known to all Silesians for decades and repeated from generation to generation. A show about people possessing an atavistic, animalistic gift of adapting to circumstances brought by fate, trying to survive at all costs, often at the expense of their own dignity.
No one before Janosch and no one after him could describe in such a suggestive way the fate of the Silesians in the 20th century, their mentality, sense of humor and at the same time all the tragedy contained in the Silesian fate. Wherever it was played, from Stuttgart to Warsaw to Strzelce Opolskie, the show evokes tears - tears of laughter and tears of emotion.
The performance received excellent reviews from such Silesian authorities as Kazimierz Kutz or Michał Smolorz.
It was recognized as the show of the year 2004, receiving the Golden Mask in this category. Another Golden Mask went to Grażyna Bułka for her role as Świętkowa in Cholonek, while Robert Talarczyk - author of the adaptation and co-director of Cholonka, received the Golden Mask after this premiere for his entire work.
Cholonek received the main prize of the Festival of Central European Theaters “Neighbors”. He has already celebrated the jubilees of Katowice Gazeta Wyborcza and Katowice Television.
This is an incredibly funny show. It causes bursts of laughter, and at the same time delivers extraordinary emotions and gives an opportunity to reflect on the identity of the Silesians and the tragic fate of this nation.
So far, Cholonek is always played to a full audience, collects great reviews and is enthusiastically received by the audience everywhere. And so since 2004...
Simply put — Cholonek still reigns on Silesian (and not only) stages!
After him you will be able to say: “I am Silesian and I am proud of it...”
