Juan de Roelas' altarpiece depicts the Jesuit Fernando de Mata receiving a vision of the Immaculate Mary. Against the backdrop of the cult of the Immaculate Conception, which has just spread in Seville, the work combines Reform Catholic piety with complex Marian iconography. Pilgrim attributes and visionary distance mark Mata as a mediator between earthly devotion and heavenly appearance.
Speakers: Dr. Sven Jakstat, Gemäldegalerie Berlin and Prof. Dr. Dr. Felix Körner SJ, Humboldt University of Berlin
The interdisciplinary series of events “Christian Picture Viewing” usually takes place once a month — except for the summer break — and is a cooperation between the St. Matthäus Foundation and the Gemäldegalerie der Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. In accordance with the calendar of the church year, selected paintings are discussed and presented for discussion by an art historian and a theologian.
Please note: The number of participants is limited to 50 people.
Tickets are available from 3:30pm at the ticket office in the lobby. A maximum of two tickets can be issued per person.
Participation is free of charge.
