The film explores the impact of ETA, the armed organisation that waged a violent campaign for Basque independence, as well as the devastating effects of heroin addiction. It portrays people caught between political violence, social marginalisation and a rapidly changing Basque society.
Released in 1988, Ander eta Yul won Ana Díez the Goya Award for Best New Director in 1989, making her a pioneering figure in New Basque Cinema and the movement’s first woman director.
