Twelve-year-old Gelsomina (Maria Alexandra Lungu) lives in rural Tuscany with her three younger sisters, her mother Angelica (Alba Rohrwacher) and her father Wolfgang (Sam Louwyck). Wolfgang was once a political idealist, but over the years he has become a washed-up patriarch.

Financially, the family is just about scraping by on the income from their own honey production. Because money is always tight, Wolfgang brings Martin (Luis Huilca Logrono), a young criminal from Germany, to the farm. Martin is on a special rehabilitation programme and his arrival turns Gelsomina's life completely upside down.

What's more, taking part in a reality TV show promises an unexpected windfall for the family, though their father actually had forbidden them from appearing on the programs. Now it's up to the girls to assert their independence against their old-fashioned head of the family...
