“A portrait of a woman painted on top of a documentary about Paris,” Agnès Varda has aptly called her first major success, which originally takes place in real time. But well to feel for exactly the hour and a half of the photo model Cléo's life, during which she waits for the result of a medical examination that she fears will mean a death sentence. Cléo (Corinne Marchand) moves around and around the city — from Rue de Rivoli over Pont Neuf and small streets via Boulevard Raspail, Parc Montsouris, Place d'Italie — on a distinctive psycho-geographical journey. Cléo speaks only in detours about her anxiety, but her look at the shapes and residents of the city says a lot. Both formally and psychologically, the film was one of the most interesting French films of the 1960s, placing Varda in the front row of his generation.
