Steve Reich’s impact on generations of performers, composers and listeners over his 6-decade career has been huge. His distinctive soundworld of looping, shifting, interlocking patterns is instantly recognisable, and the experience of hearing his music live, something close to meditation.
Reich’s 1972 classic Clapping Music is the amuse-bouche for a varied feast of works from the last 20 years. Radio Rewrite takes two Radiohead songs as its springboard. In Double Sextet, each instrument ingeniously interacts with its twin. Percussionist Colin Currie, a lifelong champion of Reich’s work, is the dedicatee of Quartet, scored for a combination of two vibraphones and two pianos that is quintessential Reich. All pave the way for tonight’s highlight, a new commission fresh from its Edinburgh International Festival world premiere.
