What does sustained international attention mean for the future of contemporary African art? Powered by Christie’s, a longstanding partner of 1-54’s, this panel considers how visibility can translate into lasting artistic, institutional and cultural value.
Considering both established institutions and emerging models, the panel will examine who shapes artistic narratives, where collections are built and how knowledge and resources circulate. The discussion will explore the relationships between market recognition, curatorial practice, collecting and public institutions. It will ask what is needed to support artists beyond moments of heightened attention, and how museums, independent initiatives and private patrons can contribute to a more durable cultural infrastructure across the African continent and its diasporas.
