In the historic hall of Hamburger Bahnhof, John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen meet in a staged concert. In the expansive installation “We Make Years Out of Hours” by Lithuanian artist Lina Lapelytė, the Zafraan Ensemble, together with singers from the opera ensemble, interweaves two works by the composers: Cage's “Hymns and Variations” (1979) shows the path “from something to nothing and back again” (“from something to nothing and back again”, Stockhausen's instrumental piece “Stop” (1965) creates an intense, physical experience of presence and energy from suddenly interrupting sound events — a dynamic happening. Starting from these pieces, the installation itself also becomes a score. Perception is moving into focus, the limits of listening are being shifted — the most important exercise for both composers to save humanity.
