This rehearsed reading is brought to you by CULTIVATE, Riverside Studios' new programme bringing the best of brand-new theatre to the stage for the first time. These plays have been carefully selected by Riverside Studios team as showing exceptional promise.
One year to Nigeria's general elections, half of the federal seats are uncontested. The old guard has fled. UK-based journalist Batse breaks the story explaining why: for eighteen months, a group calling itself The Fifth Estate has kidnapped politicians' loved ones, forcing them to govern responsibly as ransom. They've been made to pass bills, build hospitals, expose corruption, etc. Fourteen families. Four dead. Now, a retired politician offers Batse a job, a visa sponsorship which he desperately needs, and private healthcare for his sick child, in exchange for his sources. Cajoled, threatened, and confronted with the argument that evil can serve good, Batse decides to leave his fate in the hands of the public. Will they save him?
Put It On My Head is written by Inyang Edoho
