About the event

This rehearsed reading is brought to you by CULTIVATE, Riverside Studios' new programme bringing the best of brand-new theatre to the stage for the first time. These plays have been carefully selected by Riverside Studios team as showing exceptional promise.

Exploring themes of motherhood, the cost of immigration and the invisible labour of family care, The Other Half by Shola Asante is one woman's attempt to break the cycle. Or at the very least, bend it. The Other Half is a story about Lola, a British-Nigerian woman, who has never told her husband Chris, the truth about her older sister Toyin. When Lola's mother dies, she travels to Nigeria to meet the sister she has not seen in thirty years, a disabled woman left behind when the family emigrated. Her decision to atone for the past has far-reaching consequences for their marriage.

Age recommendation: 14+

CULTIVATE is a programme for theatre writers who are typically underrepresented in the theatre industry, we rely on generous donations from our patrons to keep the programme alive, if you are interested in making a donation, you can do so here.
