Gravity exercises (4-6 years)

The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw invites you to creative family workshops that accompany the latest exhibition “Sculpture after stability”.

For a very long time, it was believed that sculptures must be heavy, stable and stationary. Modern art shows, however, that form does not have to have a single, fixed shape at all! In the exhibition “Sculpture after stability” we will see works that evade gravity, balance and even drift. At a family gathering, we will look at how to keep the vertical and what happens when the sculpture loses its balance. We will consider how we can support each other and how to become living scaffolds and supports. Our own bodies will be used to test the force of gravity and to study how weight interacts with space.

What are we gonna do?

We will start the meeting with a physical warm-up, during which we will explore the limits of our balance. Then we will move to the exhibition halls to look for inspiration in the action of gravity in art. There we will see objects that hang and sculptures that seem to function at the very limit of balance. We will take a close look at structures that use different types of supports, as well as works that freely drift and float in space. Together we will consider what exactly keeps the form, allows it to last and escape from the force of gravity.

We will transfer our observations and movement experiments to the educational room at the end. We will reach for unusual materials and, thanks to the joyful cooperation, we will create our own temporary sculptures. Instead of building traditional bodies, we will focus on supporting them, connecting them and leaning against each other. We'll see how long we can keep them upright. We invite you to a fantastic fun where movement meets sculpture!
