Senet is a game that originated in ancient Egypt — scientists estimate that it is as old as three thousand years old! It was liked by rich and poor alike; some had carefully crafted sets, others drew boards on earth, stone, or temple floors. The game was so popular that there was even a hieroglyph depicting a board with vertices.

About the event

An ordinary board or a symbol of the afterlife?

Senet is a game that originated in ancient Egypt — scientists estimate that it is as old as three thousand years old! It was liked by rich and poor alike; some had carefully crafted sets, others drew boards on earth, stone, or temple floors. The game was so popular that there was even a hieroglyph depicting a board with vertices.

Over the years of evolution, senet has changed from an ordinary gameplay into a symbol of the wanderings of souls in the afterlife. Unfortunately, the rules of the game have not survived to our time, but despite this, researchers are trying to recreate the rules, using, among others, wall paintings and papyri.

How are these reconstructions going? What is left of the ancient senet nowadays?

You will find out all this during the next meeting of the series “Games of the World”. Each lecture begins with an introduction to the rules, then we briefly discuss the origin of the game and share a lot of interesting facts. “World Games” is the perfect opportunity to spend time together, learn about cultures and discover how different games have brought people together for centuries.
