singspiel in two acts

libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder

One of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's most famous opera works, staged by Sjaron Minailo, becomes a story about a world divided between opposing forces: light and darkness, reason and emotion, freedom and subordination. In this interpretation, “The Magic Flute” acquires a contemporary dimension. The director looks at the mechanisms that govern a polarized society in which political divisions and attachment to ancient rituals influence the way we perceive the world. His vision of Mozart's masterpiece impresses with its grandeur and visual imagination. Large rotating machines, luminous circles and spheres, monumental structures against the background of raw space create a hypnotic picture of reality suspended between wakefulness and sleep. Every element of the scenography, movement and gesture builds a story hidden in the symbols.

In a new production for the Poznań Opera, performer and director Sjaron Minailo reads “The Magic Flute” as a meditation on the mechanisms operating in a society polarized by political forces and paralyzed by attachment to traditional rites. The poetic aesthetic of the performance is inspired by visual arts and ritual choreography” (Krystian Lada, playwright).
