“Witches” by Jakub Lubowicz (music) and Jakub Szydłowski (libretto) is the first original musical in the history of the Krakow VARIETE Theater, inspired by the events that shook Salem in 1692.
In a harsh, puritanical congregation, an event occurs that sets in motion an avalanche of tragic consequences. Young girls, fascinated by the stories of slaves about fortune-telling from sticks and shells, meet in the forest, on the night of the spring solstice, with the hope of fulfilling the dream of the coveted love. The innocent fun is quickly interrupted by the local pastor and is considered a manifestation of the action of unclean forces. To avoid punishment, the girls begin to point out subsequent individuals as alleged accomplices of the devil. Individual accusations quickly escalate into a wave of suspicion that engulfs the entire town. Panic breaks out. Hysteria develops into a collective psychosis that destroys both victims and executioners.
Will the residents who know the truth manage to save Salem from an avalanche of terror? Will common sense prove stronger than the rising tide of absurd accusations? In a world dominated by fear and slander, is there room for loyalty, courage and love?
In the present age of ever-increasing invisible enemies, prepared with no recollection of slander and fueled religious fever, this story becomes more relevant than ever.
