“The Time of Abandonment” is an adaptation of the novel by Elena Ferrante, one of the most popular and mysterious authors, whose world fame was brought by the series “Brilliant Friend”.
The narrator-heroine of the play is an abandoned woman. Her husband left suddenly, overnight, and she was left with the child, his dog and his great disappointment. A woman cannot endure this situation calmly and, contrary to the expectations of the environment, does not behave “with dignity”. Unexpectedly for herself, she ceases to embrace all matters and focuses on her feelings, needs, including grief. And this is not at all an expression of selfishness, but a natural reaction that cannot be drowned out by conventions.
The narrator also does not lack an ironic look at herself and the situation, while being wittily malicious, especially towards her ex-husband.
Behind the adaptation of “Time of Abandonment” is a proven creative team: Weronika Szczawińska (director, playwright, cultural scholar, performer, winner of “Polityka” passports 2019) and Piotr Wawer Jr. (actor, director and theater playwright). Together they developed a unique stage language, appreciated in theaters throughout Poland. They collaborate with Marta Szypulska, set designer, one of the most original designers and seamstresses of the young generation.
