Translation: STANISŁAW BARAŃCZAK
When Stanisław Barańczak translated Peter Barnes' text on behalf of Teatr Nowy in 1993, everything in Teatr Nowy suggested that a cult performance would be created. The predictions turned out to be true: RED NOSES, directed by Eugene Korin, quickly became the “Mercedes among comedies”, a show of team play and a real collection of great individual creations. The play was part of the repertoire of the New Theatre for many years, and crowds sat in the auditorium every evening. The legend of the New was growing in strength.
Did anyone then expect that the theatrical reality of the mid-1990s would be ahead of what would happen in the world of A.D. 2020?
RED NOSES are urgently returning to the poster. The performance directed by Jan Klata, set in new circumstances, will be the cry of artists in times of pandemic. A cry underpinned not only by powerlessness, but also by an uncompromising need for theater, play and art. The performance of Jan Klata, winner of the “Passport of Politics” from 2006, the K. Swinarski Award for the 2007/2008 season, Laura Konrad in 2009, the European Theatre Award in 2018 and many other awards, is a proposal for all those who miss the Theatre of Spectators.
Perfect art for imperfect times.
