Joseph works as an anonymous bookbinder. The only thing that makes him stand out is a bad book. This is a turning point for a man — he drops his apron and leaves. However, he has the impression that neither his presence there nor his departure matter. The time that turns from the present into the past is also irrelevant. Joseph ends up in a suburban villa of the early 20th century, where he takes the position of assistant engineer-inventor. He slowly becomes there a man for everything: he keeps accounts, correspondence, is the confidant of the mistress of the house. Obediently fulfills all commands.
