Anna Badora “The Legacy of Lise Meitner”
Young scientist Nora embarks on a remarkable experiment — she creates a digital reconstruction of Lise Meitner, a prominent physicist whose discoveries contributed to the development of nuclear energy research. She wants to bring back to life not only her knowledge, but also her independence of thought and moral courage. However, it quickly turns out that the project arouses the interest of those who see in science and technology first of all a source of profit. Moreover, the digital Meitner is starting to get out of hand.
Lise Meitner (1878—1968) was one of the most prominent scholars of the 20th century. In 1938, due to her Jewish background, she had to flee Nazi Germany to Sweden. In the same year, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann conducted experiments that provided evidence for the possibility of fission of the uranium nucleus. Together with her nephew, physicist Otto Frisch, Meitner developed a theoretical explanation for this process. In 1944, only Otto Hahn received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this discovery. The omission of Meitner to this day is recognized as one of the most famous examples of underestimating the contribution of women to the development of science.
Anna Badora weaves the story of one of the most important scientists of the 20th century with a story about the technological challenges of the modern world.
