The screening on 18 Novemver will be video introduced by Dr. Ming-yeh Rawnsley (SOAS), co-editor of Taiwanese-Language Cinema: Rediscovered and Reconsidered (2024), the first English-language anthology devoted to Taiyupian.
Specially presented in a digital restoration to mark the 70th anniversary of Taiwanese-language cinema, Hsin Chi’s Dangerous Youth is one of Taiyupian’s boldest surviving works. With its striking New Wave aesthetics that echoes of Japan’s Sun Tribe films, it centers on a gritty love triangle and explores taboo themes like carnal desire, exploitation, and changing gender power dynamics.
Khue-guan (Shih Ying), a penniless delivery boy for a cosmetics company, meets Tsing-bi (Cheng Hsiao-Fen), a young and charming waitress, in awkward circumstances just as his girlfriend leaves him for a wealthy suitor. Khue-guan is intrigued by Tsing-bi and tries to get her another job after meeting Giok-sian (Kao Hsing-Chih), who runs a cabaret. Eventually, she finds out that her new job is as an escort to a lonely, elderly millionaire named Mr. Tshi.
