First came an album, then a tour (the magic of which, among other things, sprinkled over Roskilde Festival in 2018), then a Broadway show, and finally the film 'David Byrne's American Utopia'. One of the themes that has already gone down in history — and which is a joyous follow-up to the concert film 'Stop Making Sense' (1984), in which Byrne performs with a top-tuned Talking Heads.
Welcome to a veritable sensory chamber where music, choreography, images and pulse speak together. Speaks to body and mind, to feet and brain. To the whole world. Together with Spike Lee, Byrne has briefly created a film work that transcends the normal format. Between the incomparable footage from the Broadway version, where musicians and dancers are in flux throughout the concert (NOTHING stands still, not even the drums), the protagonist in small monologues amiably and disarmingly narrates the awkwardness of the political situation in the United States anno right now. About how important it is for everyone to vote, accept each other, etc. All driven by the thoughts of Byrne's Reasons to Be Cheerful project, whose mantra is to come up with solutions to the world's big problems — and not just find that the problems exist!
