Sad rock — that's how frontman Barry Rodriguez usually describes Dayseeker's music.
But there is much more to the band's music than just melancholy. A native of Southern California, Dayseeker has evolved over the years from a promising post-hardcore representative to one of those hard-playing bands that elicit strong emotional reactions from audiences. Their issues are not just about working through trauma and broken hearts, but about finally turning them into something uplifting.
“Being a teenager, I felt like a recluse,” Barry admits. However, the moment he picked up the guitar, he felt that he had found his tongue. “Music became the only thing I felt a genuine attachment to.”
Dayseeker, founded in 2012, was meant to be such a safe haven for fans and to remind fans that they are not alone in their struggles. The band, which besides Rodriguez consists of Gino Sgambelluri (guitar), Ramone Valerio (bass) and Zac Mayfield (drums), has always prioritized real emotions.
Heavier than pop-rock and much more nuanced than your average metalcore, Americans shy away from simple categorization. The fact that they have found their own niche is best evidenced by the more than 600 million streams on streaming services around the world. “The scene has changed in recent years. You no longer have to fit into any particular framework to find an audience. It gave us a lot of freedom.”
This can be heard on Dayseeker's latest album, Creature in the Black Night, which was released late last year. Produced by Daniel Braunstein (Spiritbox, Silent Planet) and mixed by Zakka Cervini (blink-182, Bring Me The Horizon, Lorna Shore), the album is the band's most immersive and polished work.
However, those expecting tearful, depressive numbers may be surprised. “Creature in the Black Night” is a sharper album, with heavier riffs and a clear vision of its own sound. “Contrary to the belief that we will become more and more commercial over time, in my opinion the exact opposite has happened. Our music is riff-based, and I'm screaming more than I've ever been. And we are fine with that,” admits the leader.
Emotional, creative and personal honesty have always been Dayseeker's strongest weapons. It's time for the Polish public to find out.
“People wait months to see us. They buy tickets. And that means we have to give our best at every concert.”
