Lifelike human-like robots perform autonomously in this performance entirely without flesh-and-blood cast members. With androids, video-animated scenography and neoclassical electronica, our propensity to conjure up “dead” things and let ourselves be seduced by imitation life is explored. THE RED SHOES unite animation theatre, robotics and horror adventure in a grotesque tale of a young girl's nascent identity formation. The performance is a radical reinterpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale “The Red Shoes” - a heartbreaking story of shoe fetishistic obsession, self-amputation and death drive. In Steen and Hejlesen's version of the fairy tale, threads are drawn to the present and a universe of dilemmas surrounding gender, power and desire opens up.
