With their spectacular video that went viral “Witch Doctor” and appearances as support for Muse and the Rolling Stones, Dutch band De Staat, remains cheerfully uncategorized. Under the wings of frontman Torre Florim, whose powerful voice acts as a call to arms, they flirt with funk and tribal rhythms, introspections and wild humor that they owe more to David Byrne or Prince than any other regular rock band. And after fourteen years of career, they are ready to start soon with a new project: Red, Yellow, Blue.
There will be no studio album — instead, there has been a gigantic collection of new songs made available on digital platforms from November 4 and will be throughout 2022 Florim has embraced the band's famed eclecticism, which created the first rock and roll art project, writing dozens of tracks replicating the colors of red, yellow and blue. Red, Yellow, Blue is an experiment in songwriting. There are so many ways people try to describe De Staat's music, and none of them fit... but red, yellow and blue are their alternate categories for the different moods of the songs the band has written all this time.
First conceived by Torre in 2006 as a challenge to himself; before the group was formed, it was a one-man project in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. “I made a huge amount of music, all kinds of it,” Torre smiles. “I just wanted to see if I could create something that sounded like a whole thing!” After combining the aforementioned sounds together, this “one whole” soon became known as De Staat — translated as “The State” — and their 2009 debut, “Wait For Evolution.” In the lineup complemented by lead guitarist Vedran Mircetic, bassist Jop van Summeren, multi-instrumentalist Rocco Hueting and drummer Tim van Delft, which De Staat achieved because those initial days were unusual.
On four more colourful albums: 2011's' Machinery ', 2013's' I_Con ', 2016's' O 'and 2019's 'Bubble Gum', De Staat have created a chameleon brand of rock that is wholly owned by them — a band that draws on influences from artists such as: Talking Heads, Rihanna and Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Michael Jackson. Run-DMC and Soulwax. And more and more people are noticing them for that reason — including some of the biggest bands in the world.
In 2017, De Staat won several highly coveted gig support contracts, including The Rolling Stones in Amsterdam and touring Europe with Muse on their hit Drones tour in 2016. In 2019, the band toured the EU and UK and played major festivals such as Rock Werchter (BE), Amsterdam Dance Event (NL) and Deichbrand Festival (DE). They replaced The Prodigy as headliner at Lowlands Festival in August 2019.
