The Wild Angels

With The Wild Angels, Roger Corman in 1966 incomparably pinpointed the lifestyle of outsiders who rejected the conventions of society just before the advent of counterculture and the great hippie boom. “Wild Angels” was a huge success and sparked a whole new genre of motorcycle movies.

We follow the fictional San Pedro branch of Hell's Angels through a series of loosely connected episodes. Most are based on stories Corman and screenwriter Charles Griffith heard when, for a few days, they hung out with the Hell's Angels in Venice, California. In the film, the gang, among other things, totally trashes a church and turns the funeral of a member into a veritable sex and drugs orgy.

Peter Fonda's monologue at the church during the funeral has been noted as one of the strongest and most quoted of the period: “We want to be free to do what we want to do. And we want to get loaded” (Sampled by dancerock outfit Primal Scream on their landmark psychedelic album 'Screamadelica').
