A talk by Aram Kerovpyan dedicated to the relationship between musical theory and the direct experience of sound. The starting point will be the practice of Armenian modal music, in which the sound is not considered as an isolated pitch tone, but as an element of a specific sound environment, based on the relationships between intervals, their intonation and the base tone. Kerovpyan will look at the process in which theoretical knowledge is confronted with auditory and embodied experience, and traditional ways of understanding the musical system are subjected to practical verification. At the center of the reflection will be the question of what happens to theory when we move away from it in favor of listening, singing and the physical experience of sound.
