THE SHOW WILL BE HELD AS PART OF THE EXHIBITION “KITSCH I CAMP”
Overview Kitsch and Camp is a journey through the aesthetics of excess, the artificial, the beautiful and the shocking. Instead of judging films through the lens of good taste, I would like to look at productions that consciously use excess to challenge the status quo and explore the boundaries of identity.
“Delicatessen” (1991) is a superbly received full-length debut by the duo Jean-Pierre Jeunet (later creator of “Amelia”) and Marc Caro. The action of the film takes place in post-apocalyptic France, where food has become a deficit commodity. In this strange world, the central place is occupied by a house with a butcher (Jean-Claude Dreyfus) running a butcher shop. A new tenant arrives in this quaint building - former clown Louison (Dominique Pinon) - who quickly discovers that the tenants have extremely dark ways to survive. Jeunet and Caro have created a grotesque world balancing between black comedy, horror and romance, with a clear influence of silent cinema. Their visual style — full of sepia, distortion and absurd details — became the duo's hallmark. The soundtrack and rhythmic editing give the film an unusual, almost musical rhythm.Today “Delicatessen” is considered one of the most original works of French cinema of the 90s and recognized as a classic of film surrealism. Despite the years, it remains a work darkly funny, visually dazzling and inimitable.
