Not only are the impressive images of divided Berlin by cameraman Henri Alekan and the extraordinary screenplay written by Peter Handke unforgettable, but also the music by Nick Cave, who can be seen playing live in the film himself. The angel Damiel walks through divided Berlin accompanied by his heavenly colleague Cassiel.
They look at a world in black and white. In search of feelings such as desire and passion, Damiel dreams of a true, earthly existence that is exclusively reserved for people. When he falls in love with trapeze artist Marion, he dares to step into mortality and experiences the world in new colors...
Himmel über Berlin is considered a classic of German auteur cinema and has received several international awards, including the Palme d'Or for Best Director in Cannes in 1987 and with the German, Bavarian and European Film Awards in 1988. In 1993, together with the main actors Bruno Ganz, Solveig Dommartin and Otto Sander, Wenders created a sequel to the film titled In Farther Away, So Close.
