Bertolt-Brecht-Platz 1, Berlin

At the beginning of 2020, the German-Palestinian journalist Alena Jabarine moved to Ramallah for three years and set out on her search for “Palestine.” What remains of the carefree memories of her childhood, the summer nights in Umm Al-Fahem, Haifa and Jaffa? What is life like in a country that is crossed by visible and invisible borders, for people on one side and for those on the other? And what, in spite of everything, makes them stick to their country? In “The Last Sky,” Alena Jabarine tells stories of her everyday life in a place that is talked about a lot, but that very few people know. She takes us through the cool alleys of Jerusalem, to overcrowded beauty salons in Ramallah, onto the rooftops of refugee camps in Bethlehem. It tells of violence and humanity, of loss and solidarity, of patience and hope in order to preserve a reality that allows us to look deep into Palestinian life — and its transience, particularly in this context
