Little Pascal (Pascal Lamorisse, the director's son) finds a big red balloon on the steps of Montmartre one morning. He takes him home, and from now on, the balloon never leaves his side. His idiosyncratic behavior puts the boy in tricky situations, but he is also happy to have found such a loyal playmate. As other children destroy the balloon, other balloons provide comfort.
