Imagine you have to make your own book

About the event

Design your own book cover - The workshop will be held in English
Imagine you have to make your own book in which you can unfold your own ideas, drawings and things that you like or dream about and that express who you are.

With the help of visual designer and graphic artist Sara Khayat, you can create your own book cover, choose a title and consider what the book is about. You can draw, paint and clip-paste with the library's discarded magazines and books that have become too worn out to lend out.

For the workshop, Sara will introduce herself as an artist and tell the children a little about her story -- including how she came to Sweden through ICORN and show examples of some of her drawings. She will also introduce the concept of banned books and words, and talk about free speech in a simple and age-appropriate way. Then she will relate the topic to the children's own ideas and to what they would like to express in their books. Afterwards, the children make their own personal book and design the cover for it. They can choose for themselves what the book will be about and use drawing, colors, collage and words to express their ideas.

The workshop's underlying theme is freedom of expression, that everyone has their own voice and has the opportunity to express themselves creatively, and the workshop is part of the #Forbudte Books Campaign 2026. Sara Khayat is a Syrian illustrator and children's book creator, and is a former free-city artist in Gävle, Sweden. She specializes in creative workshops for children. The Free City Network is a global network of cities and regions that offers temporary protection to writers, artists and journalists who are persecuted because of their work. Copenhagen has been a member since 2010.

Sara will introduce herself as an artist and share a bit of her story — including how she came to Sweden through ICORN — and show examples of her drawings.
She will also introduce the concept of banned books and words, and discuss freedom of expression in a simple, age-appropriate way. They can choose the subject matter themselves and use drawing, colors, collages, and words to express their ideas.

The workshop's underlying theme is freedom of expression - celebrating the fact that everyone has a unique voice and the opportunity to express themselves creatively.
