Presented by UCOpera
Johann Strauss II's raucous comic operetta Die Fledermaus is brought to the Bloomsbury Theatre by the UCOpera society in their 79th annual production, offering an energetic take to the wild and farcical opera.
Amid the gleaming grandeur of fashionable Viennese high society, Die Fledermaus tells the stories of the audacious and mischievous Eisenstein, who secretly attends Russian Prince Orlofsky’s lavish and rowdy party with his friend Doctor Falke; Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinda, who knowing her husband’s roguish habits, disguises herself to catch him out at the party; and their maid, Adele who contrives a way to be excused from work to attend the ball, and finds herself unexpectedly surrounded by high society and her unwitting employers.
In a carousel of disguise, mistaken identity, flirtatious energy, and plenty of champagne, Orlofsky’s party ensues in a whirlwind of bouncing waltzes and jollity – all sophistication and propriety is unmasked as Eisenstein’s brashness is humiliatingly exposed, and it is only the morning after that we see who has really orchestrated the wild affair.
