France, 17th century: The priest Urbain Grandier is famous in Loudun for sermons and affairs and openly opposes the cardinal's plans for power. Behind monastery walls, Superior Sister Jeanne develops an obsessive passion for him. When she accuses him of witchcraft, the city plunges into exorcisms, hysteria and political calculation. Russell's film adaptation of Aldous Huxley's “The Devils of Loudun” is still one of the most radical accounts of church and power.
