The school classic in a modern guise: moving and up to date

About the event

“So you think that dictatorship is no longer possible in Germany? “—” Absolutely not! We are far too enlightened for that. ”

A history teacher works on the subject of fascism. The students do not understand why the German majority watched the crimes of the National Socialists silently and idly. She starts a simple experiment by uniting the class with exercises in discipline and hierarchical behavior to create stronger solidarity, creating a sense of community in the group through symbols and slogans. The temptation of fascist ideas first gains the upper hand playfully, then ever more radically. The experiment slips away.

Today, the world is enlightened and safe. Or? Populism, xenophobia, autocracies, Meloni, Putin and movements such as the Identitarians or the National Rassemblement are fueling fear throughout Europe under the guise of great threat and danger, which presents itself in new words with familiar codes.
The real experiment “The Third Wave” by Californian high school teacher Ron Jones, which became school reading in 1981 as a globally successful novel “The Wave” by Morton Rhue (Todd Strasser), raises old questions anew under current political circumstances: What does it make a group feel superior to another? When does group cohesion lead to ostracization of others? Who is fighting for what and who is watching? In the end, do we just need a corresponding number of silent viewers to endanger democracy?
