The importance of religion has declined dramatically in recent years. At the same time, democratic societies are confronted with massive challenges: a second term of office for Donald Trump and his evangelical followers, new rampant fundamentalist tendencies, a not-so-creeping normalization of right-wing populist ideas — and all this while continuing to erode the Christian churches. But what do society and democracy lose when religion no longer plays a role? What is the potential of religion for shaping our democracy? Politician Gregor Gysi and sociologist Hartmut Rosa are discussing this with Christiane Florin.
