From East London's pirate radio to the Pump House: Grime pioneer Dizzee Rascal brings his The We Want Bass Tour to the Pump House on October 16
Since the early 00s, Dizzee Rascal has been a central figure on the British rap scene. When he released his debut album Boy in da Corner in 2003, grime was still a burgeoning underground movement with roots in East London's pirate radio stations and club environments. The album became a breakthrough, not just for Dizzee Rascal himself, but for an entire generation of British artists, earning him the Mercury Prize at just 19 years old, making him the award's youngest recipient.
With hits like “Dance Wiv Me,” “Bonkers,” “Holiday” and “Dirtee Disco,” he reached a wide audience while at the same time maintaining a connection to the sonic universe that helped define grime. The career has so far thrown off eight studio albums
Over two decades after Boy in da Corner, Dizzee Rascal is still in active service. In 2024, he released the album Don't Take It Personal, and most recently he has issued the single “C U Dance”, in which a contemporary club-oriented soundscape meets the distinctive delivery and lyrical acuity that have characterised his music since the breakthrough.
Therefore, when The We Want Bass Tour makes its way past Pumpehuset, it will not simply be a serfdom with a number of modern rap classics. It will be a concert experience where grime roots, club atmosphere and British rap history merge into one and the same show, while Dizzee Rascal sets his sights on new chapters in a career that continues to move forward.
