There are no good men in this country

Germany/France/Norway/Denmark/Afghanistan 2026, 103′

directed by Shahrbanoo Sadat

Cast: Shahrbanoo Sadat, Anwar Hashimi, Liam Hussaini, Torkan Omari, Fatima Hassani, Yasin Negah

The film is set in Afghanistan in 2021, shortly before the Taliban return to power. Naru (the director herself) is a 30-year-old cameraman working for Kabul's biggest television station. After breaking up with her cheating husband, a woman fights for the right to custody of her three-year-old son. The sad experience made her completely lose faith in men.

When Naru is transferred to the news department, she meets 50-year-old Qodrat, widely regarded as the greatest reporting authority on Afghan television. Together they set out to cover the last days of the free city before it falls back into the hands of the Taliban. The street interviews and the stories told show the fear of the inhabitants for what is to come. With the subsequent realized materials, the atmosphere becomes more and more tense. High-risk work and proving themselves in difficult situations bring Naru and Qodrat closer together. A bond is born between them, which will call into question the strict opinion of the heroine about men.

Shahrbanoo Sadat opened the last edition of the Berlin International Film Festival. It combines a love story with a broader view of Afghan society, ranging from patriarchy and the struggle for women's rights, to the tragic consequences of the Taliban's return.
