About the event

“Muranów Cinema” is one of the films of the French series “Mythical Movie Theaters”, telling stories inspired by unusual cinemas from all over the world.

The most important protagonist of Olga Prud'homme Farges's documentary is Muranów Cinema itself — not only as a place of film screenings, but also as a space of memory, built on the ruins of the former Jewish quarter of Warsaw and the ghetto area. Through its history, the film also tells about Warsaw, Polish cinematography, the Holocaust, the destruction and reconstruction of the city.
However, this great story is intertwined with a very personal story. It was at the Muranów Cinema, in 1961, that the director's parents met — a young Frenchman and a young Polish woman. Their chance encounter became the beginning of Olga Prud'homme Farges' family history, and at the same time the emotional axis of the film and the starting point for a reflection on how places are written in our memory and how they can influence human destinies.

Muranów Cinema is not a classic historical document. The director abandons traditional interviews, leading the narration in her own voice. It combines contemporary Muranov photographs with photographs, fragments of films and archival materials. This creates more of a cinematic essay about memory, space and cinema than a chronicle of a single place.

As the director herself says:
Muranów becomes both a witness and a hero here — a place where cinema still speaks, memory lasts, and even the most personal stories are inextricably linked with history.
The film was presented at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, Timeless Film Festival Warsaw and the New Horizons International Film Festival in Wrocław.
A special event of our October meeting will be the presence of Roman Gutek, who will be a special guest of DKF REVERSE. This will be an opportunity not only to watch a film about one of the most symbolic places of Polish film culture, but also to talk about cinema as a place, memory, history and community of viewers.
